Vidya Balan is a Tamil Iyer born on the 1st January 1978 in Palakkad,Kerala. Her father is P.R.Balan who is the vice president of ETC channel while her mother is a homemaker. She has an older sister,Priya.
She studied in Mumbai at St Anthony’s School and later graduated in Sociology from St Xavier’s College, after which she enrolled for M.A from the Mumbai University. She speaks several languages like Tamil,Malayalam, English, Hindi and Bengali.
Vidya Balan started work as an actress in the Malayalam movie Chakram, paired against Mohanlal, however the film was abandoned mid-way through production. After making her debut in television advertising as a model for a Surf Excel advertisement in 1998, she proceeded to do over 25 TV ads, (mostly directed by Pradeep Sarkar), followed with a variety of acting stints in music videos (Euphoria, Shubha Mudgal and Pankaj Udhas), Hindi TV soap operas (Hanste Khelte and Hum Paanch) and a Bengali movie, Bhaalo Theko, for which she won the Best Actress Anand Lok Puraskar award in Kolkata. Hanste Khelte and Ektaa Kapoor's Hum Paanch.
She made her debut as a model in a Surf Excel advertisement in 1998. She has acted in scores of ad films, most of which were directed by Pradeep Sarkar. She made her acting debut in a Bengali film called Bhalo Theko in 2003. It was closely followed by her Hindi film debut in Parineeta in 2005, for which she received a Fimfare Award for Best Female Debut. The film was a commercial success and saw Vidya running shoulders with Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt. In 2006, she worked with Dutt again in Raju Hirani's blockbuster Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Once again her performance was well received by critics and this film went on to become the second highest grossing film of that year.
